Imphal: The Joint Administrative Council of the AMTUC and AMGEO suspended its planned Silent Mass Rally for September 11. JAC president Rajkumar Basumani announced the move at the group’s Babupara office. The rally intended to protest the state government’s failure to address grievances from government workers, pensioners, and their families.
Basumani claims the administration ignored a 10-point Charter of Demands despite repeated appeals. The government promised to declare Saturdays as holidays and release a pending 3 percent Dearness Allowance and Dearness Relief during meetings on July 3 and 6, but progress stalled. He said, "The government failed to address their grievances."
The JAC highlighted massive staffing issues across Manipur. Approximately 50,000 sanctioned posts currently sit vacant. These empty roles cause a monthly financial loss of Rs. 287 crore, totaling Rs. 3,444 crore each year. Basumani warned that abolishing these roles would hurt the state's educated youth. He urged civil society, economists, and student bodies to unite to protect these positions.
The suspension does not signal an end to the protest. The council clarified they are stepping back to provide moral support to public movements concerning the Census and NRC update. The JAC plans to monitor the state's situation and will review their strategy for future action regarding their pending demands.
