Manipur Deploys Heavy Security to Break Month-Long Highway Blockade

Imphal: Manipur authorities sent a massive security force to Namdilong today. They want the month-long economic blockade on National Highway-2 gone. The protests hit their 28th day. The Liangmai Naga community started this agitation on June 5. They want justice for six civilians kidnapped and killed back in May 2026. Local Meitei and Nepali residents are backing them.

The Imphal West Superintendent of Police ordered the operation. A mix of Manipur Police, the Village Defence Force, two commando units, the Rapid Action Force, and the Central Reserve Police Force are now on the scene. Additional Superintendent of Police Rojit Irom is leading the charge. Protesters have stayed firm. Around 40 women volunteers continue to block trucks filled with supplies. Passenger buses and ambulances still get a pass.

Critics point to a double standard. The state moved fast here but ignored long-term movement restrictions in the Kangpokpi district. Kuki civil society groups control those roads. Many residents now question why this site faced such swift intervention. Protest leaders suspect the government and have called for reinforcements. They told reporters that "protest organisers reportedly appealed for more volunteers to gather at the site to strengthen the ongoing agitation."
