Imphal: Manipur is running dry. Local milk production fails to meet the state's daily demand, forcing the Manipur Milk Producers' Cooperative Union to overhaul its operation. They need more milk. Fast.
The union, often called Manipur Dairy, is shifting its strategy under the National Dairy Development Board. Managing Director S. Kenedy Singh says the state has historically struggled to keep up with needs. "There remains a considerable gap between milk production and consumption in Manipur," Singh said.
The goal is clear. They want every resident to hit the Indian Council of Medical Research target of 300 grams of milk per day. To get there, the board is pumping in technical expertise and cash. They are also moving the needle on health with products like probiotic curd, lassi, and fortified milk.
Growth is happening now. The union currently pulls milk from 34 cooperative societies across the region. They also supply farmers with cattle feed and mineral supplements to keep the supply chain moving. The big play comes under the White Revolution 2.0 program. They plan to balloon their network to 300 cooperative societies by the spring of 2029.
