Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh met with village representatives at the New Civil Secretariat on Thursday. They discussed security gaps following a destructive raid in Kamjong district. Suspected cadres of the Kuki National Army-Burma crossed the border on Wednesday to target local homes. They torched 25 houses and 11 refugee camps in Kherongruen and Huimine Thana. The attack caused massive property damage estimated at several lakhs.
Residents are furious. They claim the 11 Assam Rifles failed to act despite having a post just 100 metres from the chaos. Locals now demand the state government swap those troops for state security forces. They also allege the Assam Rifles provided false reports about the weaponry used by the militants. While the Border Security Force accurately identified automatic firearms, the Assam Rifles gave a conflicting account.
The Chief Minister focused on long-term stability during the meeting. He discussed the Vibrant Villages Programme to bolster defenses and economic health for people living on the front lines. He stated, "The Government remains committed to the effective implementation of the Government of India’s Vibrant Villages Programme (VVP) to strengthen border villages, improve livelihoods, and promote inclusive development."
The Ramphoi Village Authority condemned the violence. Families want an immediate, fair investigation into the security failure. They expect the government to protect them from future cross-border incursions.
