Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh has called on the public to abandon bandhs and blockades, arguing that these protest tactics only increase the economic struggles of daily wage earners. Speaking at the inauguration of a new bridge in Imphal West district on May 22, the Chief Minister urged citizens to resolve their grievances through open dialogue with the government rather than resorting to shutdowns.
Reflecting on recent regional instability, Singh highlighted the severe toll that violence and resulting protests have taken on the state economy. He specifically noted the tragic April bomb attack in the Bishnupur district, which killed two children and triggered widespread disruptions throughout Manipur. He stated that while anger toward the government is understandable, such frustration should be addressed through mutual understanding.
During his address, the Chief Minister shared insights from his recent visits to the violence-hit Jiribam district. He reported that interactions with local Kuki, Paite, Hmar, and Meitei community members showed that people at the grassroots level are maintaining cordial relations. He emphasized that unity is essential for the region moving forward.
The event marked the opening of a new reinforced concrete bridge over the Nambul River in the Lamsang constituency. Singh noted that this infrastructure project is part of a broader government effort to improve connectivity and support local markets. He reaffirmed his commitment to building quality infrastructure to foster long-term welfare and progress across the state.
