Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh visited Kuki-majority villages in Kangpokpi on Wednesday. He promised to tackle security gaps, fix infrastructure, and support people displaced by ongoing violence. The trip aimed to bridge deep communal divides.
Local leaders greeted the Chief Minister in Taphou Kuki village. They thanked him for securing the release of 14 villagers recently held hostage in Senapati district. Village chief Lengmang Chongloi asked for a permanent security post to guard the border, plus a new community hall and market shed for his 1,200 residents.
Khemchand Singh promised to build the market shed immediately. He ordered the local Deputy Commissioner to push forward the community hall project. He also pledged to review the request for a new security post. The Chief Minister met with United Naga Council leaders earlier to ensure the hostages walked free.
Sadar Hills village leaders called for an end to the National Highway-2 blockade. They claim it ruins the local economy. Thangminlen Kipgen of Kuki Inpi Kangpokpi pushed for more police officers in district stations. Singh vowed to boost the force, noting that he recently deployed Kuki officers in Imphal and Meitei officers in Kangpokpi to build trust.
Church leaders in Kangpokpi Bazar pressed for arrests regarding the May 13 killing of three pastors. They called this incident a major spark for recent unrest. Singh promised that nobody escapes the law regardless of their background. He stated, "If anyone has committed a crime, whether Meitei, Naga or Kuki, they will face the law."
The Chief Minister also focused on the displaced. He directed officials to prioritize healthcare for cancer and dialysis patients. He warned that the state must look ahead. "We cannot allow our future generation to suffer because of the conflict. As elders, we must remain patient and work towards lasting peace," Singh added.
