Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh officially launched 477 new vehicles for the state police force on Monday. The ceremony, held at the 1st Battalion Manipur Rifles Parade Ground in Imphal, marks a major investment under the federal Assistance to States for Modernisation of Police scheme. The government received approval for 196.61 crore rupees from the Ministry of Home Affairs last October to fund these modernisation efforts.

The newly acquired fleet is designed to boost mobility and emergency response times across the state. The diverse collection of vehicles includes 100 motorcycles, 60 bulletproof Rakshak vehicles, 74 Tata Yodha units, 50 Bolero Neo SUVs, 50 Bolero Campers, 39 Bolero B6 models, 30 Tata 407 vehicles, 20 Tata trucks, 20 Mahindra buses, 19 water tankers, 10 mine protected vehicles, and five HMR vehicles. According to Director General of Police Rajiv Singh, 54 per cent of this equipment will be deployed to hill districts, while the remaining 46 per cent will support operations in the valley.

During the event, the Chief Minister praised the courage of police personnel who have worked to maintain peace since the outbreak of violence in May 2023. He highlighted that the state has recently increased ration and uniform allowances to better support the force. Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam added that the new vehicles fulfill the vision of strengthening security forces across the country. He encouraged officers to foster positive relationships with the public, emphasizing that improved intelligence gathering and community cooperation are essential for preventing future unrest.
