Imphal: Security forces are scouring Manipur’s Ukhrul district for militants following a deadly ambush that killed two Assam Rifles soldiers. Warrant Officer Balwant Singh and Havildar Chandra Mohan Singh died Monday when attackers struck their vehicle near Nungshang Kong on the Imphal-Dimapur highway.
Joint teams from state and central agencies are tracking the shooters. The attack came just days after soldiers destroyed militant bunkers at Thoyee and Jalenbung villages. Tension is high. The military maintains a heavy presence.
The National Socialist Council of Nagalim-Isak-Muivah denied responsibility for the violence. The group claimed it remains dedicated to the ceasefire and peace talks with the Indian government. In a public statement, the outfit said it was “neither involved in nor had any knowledge of the said incident.”
Authorities are not slowing down. Police in Kangpokpi discovered an improvised explosive device and mortar shells during a sweep of Chiru village. Officers also arrested four militants in Imphal East and Kakching districts. In Churachandpur, troops picked up two Kuki National Front members carrying 77 rounds of live ammunition.
Troops now man 113 checkpoints across the state. They want to stop the flow of illegal guns and explosives. Convoys carrying food and fuel along the Imphal-Jiribam highway now move under armed guard to keep supplies flowing.
