Maku Village Authorities Warn of 48-Hour Strike Over Stalled Infrastructure

Imphal: The Maku Village Authority is threatening a 48-hour total bandh from midnight on June 5 to June 7. The strike aims to protest the government's failure to complete critical infrastructure projects that have been abandoned mid-construction. Headman A.S. Eleazer Zimik and Maku Development Council Chairman Aleng Shaiza accused the Manipur State Rural Development Agency, the Rural Engineering Department, and the Health Department of administrative apathy.

At the heart of the dispute is an 8-kilometer road project under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana. Awarded to M/s HVS Construction Materials Pvt. Ltd. for over Rs 330 lakh, the project was originally slated for completion by April 2020. Villagers report that essential components like drainage and retaining walls remain unfinished. Although blacktopping work finally began in March 2024, the contractor reportedly abandoned the site in May 2025. A formal complaint regarding the substandard work remains ignored by the Chief Engineer nine months later.

Residents are also calling for the immediate resumption of a sub-health center project funded by the PM-ABHIM scheme. Construction on the building, valued at over Rs 50 lakh and managed by M/s Kshetrimayum, stalled in October 2025. The village authority claims these delays reflect a recurring pattern of neglect toward hill district infrastructure. Leaders have now demanded urgent intervention and accountability, warning that the blockade will proceed unless construction resumes and officials take action against the contractors.
