Longleng Town Council Orders Immediate Removal of Public Space Encroachments

Kohima: The Longleng Town Council has issued a formal directive requiring the immediate removal of all encroachments from public spaces across the town. This move aims to address growing concerns regarding public safety, sanitation, and the need for smoother traffic movement throughout the urban area.

Official records show that various shopkeepers, vendors, and private individuals have been occupying public footpaths, walkways, roadsides, and drainage areas. These unauthorized activities, which include storing construction materials, displaying goods, and setting up temporary stalls, have obstructed pedestrian walkways and hindered vehicle traffic.

The council emphasized that these obstructions pose significant risks to residents and complicate local urban management. Citing the Nagaland Municipal Act, 2023, the administration has prohibited the placement of any items that block shop entrances, public paths, or emergency service routes. According to the official notification, these encroachments have "obstructed pedestrian movement, inconvenienced customers and disrupted traffic flow."

Failure to comply with the directive will result in enforcement measures. The council has warned that it will seize goods, remove unauthorized structures, recover associated costs from the parties responsible, and initiate legal action including the imposition of penalties.
