Kohima: A retaining wall, farm road, and gate collapsed at the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Zunheboto on July 31. The slide hit at 7 am. Nagaland University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Jagadish Kumar Patnaik and his engineering team inspected the destruction that same morning.
Staff moved into the university’s cafeteria in the Main Administration building to keep operations running. They are now moving into an office at the old Girls Gymnasium building. The transfer is a heavy lift since the center holds vital agricultural machinery and serves as a farmer training hub. Some equipment remains stranded in the dangerous zone.
A fresh crack near the KVK building entrance sparks fear. Officials covered the exposed soil to stop movement, but they know it is not a permanent fix. Heavy rain could trigger more collapses. "We cannot give any guarantee at this stage," one staff member said regarding the building's future.
The Additional Deputy Commissioner of Akuluto has been notified of the crisis but has yet to inspect the site. Staff suggest that pre-Independence Day duties likely kept local officials away from the landslide zone.
