Kohima: A landslide destroyed a rented home in Upper Penli Ward on July 29, killing two brothers and injuring their mother. The house sat above the Sangtam Baptist Church pastor's residence in the Mokokchung district of Nagaland. It was a brutal hit. Muwalong Sangtam, 19, and Thsidiba Sangtam, 16, died in the collapse. Both were students at Queen Mary Higher Secondary School. Muwalong attended Class XII while his younger brother, Thsidiba, was in Class XI.
Their father, Merenba Sangtam, hails from Alisopur village. The boys' mother survived the disaster but sustained injuries. Doctors are currently treating her at a local hospital. Following a prayer service at the Sangtam Baptist Church compound, family members and the Sangtam community gathered to collect the bodies. The Eastern Nagaland People's Union Mokokchung stated, "The tragic incident has left the community in mourning, with condolences continuing to pour in for the bereaved family."
Mourners will transport the bodies back to Alisopur village. Family will perform the last rites there. This event marks the latest in a string of rain-linked disasters across Nagaland. Heavy monsoon rains continue to batter the region. These storms trigger landslides and floods, smashing infrastructure and killing residents.
