Imphal: The Centre has approved the inter-cadre deputation of Ladakh Police chief Mukesh Singh to Manipur, where he is expected to serve as the state's Director General of Police. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet cleared the move as a special case in public interest, according to a May 21 order from the Personnel Ministry.
Singh, a 1996-batch Indian Police Service officer from the AGMUT cadre, will serve a three-year term in Manipur. He is set to replace current police chief Rajiv Singh, who is moving to the Cabinet Secretariat to serve as Secretary (Security). In this new role, the outgoing DGP will oversee the administrative framework of the Special Protection Group, which is responsible for the safety of the Prime Minister and his immediate family.
The leadership change arrives during a period of significant instability in Manipur. The state has been plagued by ethnic violence since May 3, 2023, sparked by a Tribal Solidarity March in the hill districts that opposed the Meitei community's request for Scheduled Tribe status. The ongoing conflict has resulted in at least 260 deaths and the displacement of thousands, leaving the restoration of peace as a primary challenge for the incoming police leadership.
