Labourer dies in construction site soil collapse in New Shillong

Shillong: A construction worker died on Friday after being buried by a sudden soil collapse in Mawdiangdiang, New Shillong Township. The incident occurred as workers excavated a foundation pit for a building project.

The State Disaster Response Force launched a rescue mission after receiving notice from the District Disaster Management Authority of East Khasi Hills. Inspector T. Tynsong led the team to the site, arriving at 2:42 pm to begin the search.

Officials stated that a large mass of filled soil from the upper area of the site gave way, trapping the victim inside the pit. Paul H. Shylla, the Additional Public Relations Officer for the Directorate of Civil Defence and Home Guards, noted the intensity of the recovery effort. "At approximately 4:10 pm, the SDRF team retrieved the trapped labourer from under the collapsed soil. Unfortunately, the victim had succumbed," he said.

Local police, the construction site owner, and the area headman were present during the operation. Authorities have since taken charge of the body to conduct the required legal procedures.
