Shillong: The Dorbar Shnong of Laban is defending its decision to collect roadside parking fees. Officials insist the move follows strict government directives. The rates started at 40 rupees but dropped to 20 after local outcry. It is a business arrangement. The Dorbar keeps 80 percent of the revenue, while the state collects the rest.
Contractors run the show. They hire attendants to man the streets. Rangbah Shnong Edward Kharwanlang claims the system clears up gridlock and keeps traffic moving. He noted that the group offers a small break for drivers. "Vehicles parked for less than five minutes are exempted from the fee, but those occupying a parking space beyond that limit are charged the standard Rs 20."
The Dorbar takes no heat for missing or broken cars. Park at your own risk. This lack of security frustrates locals who want better infrastructure for their cash. Some residents say they should not pay to park near their own homes. Others argue the fees stop people from hogging the curb. Reports of attendants drinking on the job or overcharging visitors have fueled the anger.
Shillong remains split. Nearby areas like Laitumkhrah and Mawlai skip these fees entirely. They prefer hitting violators with fines in no-parking zones instead. Drivers are now demanding a fair, citywide policy that actually guarantees vehicle safety.
