Imphal: Kuki-Zo protesters in the Kangpokpi district kicked off an indefinite, round-the-clock sit-in at the Gamgiphai Buffer Zone. They want the Manipur government to clear blockades along National Highway-2 immediately. The route has suffered from disruptions for nearly two months, choking off essential supplies to the hill districts.
Tensions flared Tuesday when hundreds tried to march to the highway to help reopen the route. Security forces blocked their path. Now, volunteers operate a rotational blockade at Gamgiphai. They stop passenger vehicles and freight trucks while letting ambulances and security convoys pass through. Protesters even help stranded travelers find other ways to reach their destinations.
Committee on Tribal Unity spokesperson Ng. Lun Kipgen highlighted the district's diverse population. He said, "The community continues to await Government intervention to clear areas allegedly linked to enforcement of the prolonged blockade, particularly in the Namduilong-Kanglatongbi sector."
Kipgen urged both federal and state authorities to pursue an inclusive policy. He noted that Kuki-Zo leaders remain committed to the protest until the government guarantees that traffic flows without interference. The standoff continues as the state administration faces mounting pressure to restore order on the strategic road.
