Kuki Students Organization Protests Over Alleged Abductions in Manipur

Imphal: Hundreds of demonstrators gathered at Shangkai Village on May 20 to demand the immediate release of allegedly abducted Kuki-Zo civilians. Organized by the Kuki Students Organization of Ukhrul District alongside the Kuki Women Union, the protest drew a wide range of participants, including village leaders, educators, students, and local community members.

Protesters voiced frustration over what they described as a lack of government intervention regarding the region's ongoing security concerns. A central focus of the demonstration was the delayed implementation of a March 19 memorandum of understanding. Speakers at the event argued that the failure to honor this agreement has worsened the difficulties faced by the Kuki student community and deepened the atmosphere of fear in the hill districts.

During the event, KSO Ukhrul Vice-President Mercy characterized the inaction of authorities as a betrayal of trust. She emphasized that the missing individuals are vital members of the community whose disappearances have caused significant anxiety. While demanding stronger security measures and the protection of local rights, organizers maintained that their movement would continue to operate peacefully as they seek justice and government accountability.
