Imphal: Members of the Kuki Students Organisation and the Kuki Women’s Union held a sit-in at Shangkai Village in Ukhrul on Wednesday to protest the ongoing humanitarian crisis affecting their community. Participants expressed deep frustration over the alleged failure to implement a Memorandum of Understanding signed on March 19, which they claim has left students without proper educational facilities.
A significant portion of the demonstration focused on the abduction of 14 Kuki-Zo men, including three students. Organizers blamed the SDSA and the NSCN-IM for these kidnappings. During the event, school children held placards calling for the safe return of the hostages and better access to formal education, stating they want to return to their schools rather than learning in temporary spaces like church buildings.
Mercy Khongsai, vice-president of KSO-Ukhrul, addressed the crowd to highlight the community's mounting frustration regarding administrative neglect and what she described as systemic atrocities in the Ukhrul and Kamjong districts. She stated that the community is no longer willing to remain silent in the face of these injustices.
The protest concluded with an urgent appeal for the immediate release of the 14 detained men and for authorities to address the broader security concerns of the Kuki-Zo people. Organizers emphasized that they are seeking justice and security rather than sympathy, vowing to continue their efforts until their demands are met.
