Kuki Inpi Manipur Organizes Statewide Rallies to Demand Federal Intervention

Imphal: Thousands of protesters took to the streets across Manipur on June 19, participating in a statewide rally organized by Kuki Inpi Manipur to demand urgent federal intervention in the region. The demonstrations, coordinated locally by the Committee on Tribal Unity, Sadar Hills, culminated in the submission of a formal memorandum addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The largest gathering took place at the Kangpokpi district headquarters. Demonstrators marched from Nute Kailhang along National Highway 2 before reaching the office of the Deputy Commissioner to file their grievances. Kuki civil society representatives stated that the event was held to ensure authorities prioritize civilian security and regional stability. Addressing reporters, they noted, "The rally was intended to draw attention to the concerns of the community and seek timely action from the authorities."

The seven-point charter of demands includes a judicial inquiry into the June 16 death of a Kolchung village resident during a security operation in the Henglep subdivision. Additionally, the organization requested thorough investigations into recent civilian casualties and property damage. The memorandum calls for enhanced security deployments in vulnerable areas and greater transparency regarding ongoing investigations into the unrest.

Beyond immediate security measures, the organization urged the Government of India to review existing ceasefire arrangements involving armed groups. The document also emphasized the need for comprehensive compensation for affected families and a long-term political solution for the Kuki-Zo people. Furthermore, the group requested government intervention to foster better relations between Kuki-Zo and Naga communities, aiming to restore public confidence and ensure safety across the state.
