Shillong: The Khasi Students Union launched a statewide campaign in Mawkyrwat this Monday. They gave the MDA-II government a 15-day ultimatum to act on five specific demands. The union leadership warned the state against ignoring their platform. Pynshaiborlang Rani, the CEC assistant general secretary, addressed the crowd. He told the government that if they try to suppress the public, they are making a grave mistake. "We have our own new methods and tactics of this generation to fight against the government if it violates the rights of the people, the rights of the citizens, the rights of the indigenous people, and the rights of the poor," Rani said.
The union demands the immediate cancellation of the July 31 public hearing held for the Shree Cement limestone mining project at Lum Syrman. Rani slammed the district administration and police for their conduct during the event. He claimed the session functioned as a private meeting for corporate interests. Opponents of the project faced tear gas and stones while trying to attend.
The KSU also lists four other requirements. They want the government to implement the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act of 2016 and amend the 2020 Migrant Workers Act. They also called for streamlined recruitment at NEIGRIHMS and better transparency within the MPSC and District Selection Committees. The union plans to hold follow-up public meetings in Khliehriat, Umsning, Sohra, Nongstoin, Mawryngkneng, Mairang, and Jowai to keep the pressure on.
