Shillong: The federal government has not greenlit uranium mining in Meghalaya. BJP MLA Alexander Laloo Hek confirmed the Union Mines Ministry is still studying the viability of the area, but no official decision to extract has been made. Federal authorities will not move forward without local support. Hek said, "Da·o dipet Union Mines Ministry, rong·mesak bikotani cholrangko niengmitingsa ong·kuenga aro Meghalaya a·doko rong·mesak bikotna tik ka·ade ong·kujaenga. A·doko songdongenggipa manderang ra·chakgenchimosa ma·mong sorkari, ja·kurangko de·chakataigen."
The state government stands firm against the proposal. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma promised the Assembly will pass a formal resolution to block all mining activities. The state has maintained this position since the start. Sangma stated, "Meghalaya a·doko maming dakeba rong·mesak bikotna sorkari on·jawa. Iako chinga a·bachengonin aganmanaha aro da·oba ia apsankon agankuaigen. Rong·mesak bikotaniko jegalna gita sorkari, bakan resolution-ko pass ka·gen."
Pressure remains high. The Khasi Students Union recently accused leaders of attempting to push extraction projects in Domiasiat, located in the South West Khasi Hills. They urged the state government and the three autonomous district councils to stop the development. The union also alleged that a former MLA from Ri Bhoi and other associates purchased land containing uranium deposits. They claim these individuals plan to flip the land to the Uranium Corporation of India Limited for profit. The KSU promised to name the former politicians involved in these land deals.
