KSU Honours Padma Shri Recipient Hally War for Living Root Bridge Preservation

Shillong: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Environment Cell visited the home of Padma Shri awardee Hally War in Shnong Siej this week to celebrate his contributions to Meghalayan heritage. War earned the national honour in 2026 for his lifelong dedication to developing the Umkar Living Root Bridge.

Reflecting on his work, War explained that he began shaping the bridge’s roots as a ten-year-old child. He noted that the structure was never intended as a tourist destination. Instead, it served as a vital piece of infrastructure for villagers needing to reach their agricultural lands. Before the root bridge was established, residents had to rely on unstable crossings built from bamboo and logs.

The bridge has since evolved into a significant economic asset for the community. War observed that visitor numbers surged following official recognition from state and union ministers. During the delegation's visit, led by Shelkitbok Kharbani and Mesadap L Skhembill, War encouraged younger generations to guard their indigenous knowledge. He stressed the value of dedication to one's craft, stating, "hard work remains the key to success."

KSU representatives praised War for his role in maintaining the region’s unique ecological and cultural identity. His work at the Umkar bridge continues to provide sustainable livelihoods for the local community through tourism.
