Shillong: The Khasi Students Union (KSU) dropped a bombshell this week. They claim influential figures are buying land in Domiasiat to push for uranium mining. The group pointed to a former Ri-Bhoi MLA and government-linked individuals. They suspect these buyers want to flip the property for huge profits later.
KSU president Raymond Kharjana questioned the sudden interest in the region. Domiasiat lacks coal or tourism, yet prices are rising. He told a crowd, "The obvious question is why are people suddenly eager to buy land in this region." The student union even accused outsiders of pressuring the family of late activist Spility Lyngdoh Langrin to sell.
The state government is staying quiet. Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar claimed he knew nothing about the land grab. He insists the state stands with the people regarding mining. Still, the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) wants answers. They plan to review the evidence and might launch a formal probe.
The KHADC remains firm. They will reject any future uranium mining at Mawthabah-Domiasiat. Council member Powell Sohklet said they would meet with KSU leaders soon. They also received a request to pass an official resolution against the extraction project.
