Guwahati: The Kopili River is rising fast. Seven gates at the Khandong dam in Umrangso opened Sunday after heavy rains pushed reservoir levels to the limit. Residents living near the banks and in low-lying areas must prepare for flooding.

Central Water Commission data at 8 p.m. Monday placed the river at 59.55 metres. It sits less than a metre below the 60.50-metre danger mark. The water is already moving quickly and turning foamy in several spots downstream. People are seeing the surge.

The North Eastern Electric Power Corporation sent warnings to 18 districts across Assam. Officials told local administrations to keep close watch on the rising current. The corporation issued a clear directive: "Authorities have advised people to avoid entering the river and to remain vigilant."

Conditions remain tense. Everyone needs to stay clear of the water until levels drop. District teams are tracking the river and coordinating emergency plans to stop accidents before they happen.
