Shillong: The Khasi Students Union is pushing the Meghalaya government and local district councils to pass formal bans on uranium mining. Union leaders made the demand during a public meeting in Domiasiat this Saturday. They want an immediate stop to project plans in the South West Khasi Hills.
KSU president Raymond Kharjana claimed powerful figures are buying up land in uranium-rich zones to hand over to the Uranium Corporation of India Limited. He accused these groups of pressuring the family of late activist Spility Lyngdoh Langrin to sell their property. Activists now face threats and fake summons from people pretending to represent agencies like the CBI and NIA.
The union also blasted a recent government policy change. A September 2025 Union Environment Ministry memo removes the need for public hearings on uranium projects by citing national security. The KSU claims the government ignores the area’s needs for clean water, roads, and schools to punish locals for their resistance.
Kharjana stated, “The people of Domiasiat and neighbouring villages have consistently rejected uranium mining because of concerns over its environmental, health and social implications. The stand of the KSU remains unchanged and we will oppose any attempt to revive the project.”
General secretary Reuben Najiar said his team is filing RTI requests to track shady land deals. They plan to expose the political players involved in the near future. The union wants the upcoming state assembly session to pass a law forbidding the sale of mining-zone land to corporations.
