Shillong: The Khasi Authors’ Society has officially distanced itself from its president, D.R.L. Nonglait, following his decision to run as the National People’s Party candidate in the upcoming Shillong parliamentary by-election. The organization issued a statement to clarify that Nonglait is seeking office as an individual rather than as a representative of the society.
Society officials emphasized that while their membership includes people from all professional backgrounds, the group maintains strict political and religious neutrality. Their primary objective remains the promotion and advancement of literature.
Nonglait has formally notified the executive committee of his political ambitions. To manage the transition, he has temporarily stepped down from his leadership duties, handing over responsibilities to the vice-president. The general council of the KAS has already approved this arrangement.
Nonglait is set to face a competitive field for the seat. His opponents include the Voice of the People Party candidate Batskhem Myrboh, Congress representative Vincent H. Pala, and United Democratic Party candidate Vivan G.K. Kynta.
