Shillong: Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) Leader of Opposition Titosstarwell Chyne has warned the council against the arbitrary removal of elected traditional heads. While the council holds the responsibility to protect customary institutions under the Sixth Schedule, Chyne argued that leadership disputes typically originate from within the Himas rather than the council itself.
Chyne addressed recent controversies, including the suspension of the Syiem of Hima Mylliem and a vacancy in Hima Sohra. While he stopped short of critiquing the current Executive Committee regarding the Mylliem chief, he intends to seek further clarification during the next council session. He noted that he currently lacks the specific details regarding the suspension.
The opposition leader emphasized that the council must adhere to established protocols when investigating allegations against traditional leaders. This process includes holding formal hearings and issuing show-cause notices before taking any disciplinary action. He maintained that removing a Syiem who was elected through customary processes should be a last resort, distinguishing such cases from the appointment of acting leaders.
