Justice Katakey Panel Calls for Verification of All South West Khasi Hills Coke Plants

Shillong: A judicial committee led by retired Justice B.P. Katakey has ordered a comprehensive audit of all coke oven plants in the South West Khasi Hills district. This recommendation follows ongoing concerns regarding the origin of coal used by these facilities. The committee, which monitors compliance with Supreme Court and National Green Tribunal directives, wants authorities to verify coal sources and production levels dating back to January 1.

The push for inspections follows claims of illegal mining activity near Nongumsur village. After allegations surfaced in a digital news report, police investigated the site but found no evidence of recent extraction. Officers noted that the area was waterlogged and featured only old, rusted machinery. The report concluded that the viral footage showing excavators and dumper trucks was outdated and did not represent current site conditions. Additionally, investigators found no evidence to support claims of illegal coal exports through the Cherragaon port, confirming that all exported stock held valid documentation from Coal India Limited.

Despite the lack of evidence regarding illegal mining at the specific site, the committee remains concerned about the inputs used at local coke factories. District officials have been tasked with auditing factory records to ensure transparency in production and supply chains. The committee stated, "The Committee, therefore, recommended that the civil and police administration visit all coke factories in the district and verify documents relating to the source of coal and the quantity of coke produced." Authorities must submit their findings by June 10, with the possibility of extending the probe if irregularities appear.
