Shillong: Jathang, one of the oldest settlements in Hima Mawphlang, is now the center of a new ecological restoration and sustainable livelihood project. Launched during World Environment Day, the initiative is a joint effort between the Hima Mawphlang Multipurpose Primary Agriculture Credit Society and the climate resilience group Earthtree.
During the event, the Lyngdoh of Hima Mawphlang, CA Lyngdoh, urged the community to prioritize environmental protection. He pointed to the region's sacred groves as successful, long-standing examples of how indigenous practices can effectively manage and conserve local landscapes.
The project aims to restore natural ecosystems while simultaneously creating economic opportunities for local residents. Earthtree Director Sunny Donkupar Mawiong emphasized the significance of the collaboration, stating, "the project marks the start of a long-term partnership intended to restore ecosystems and generate lasting benefits for future generations."
The launch featured a symbolic plantation drive where participants arranged saplings to form a map of India. Students from four area schools joined the event, highlighting the importance of involving the younger generation in long-term conservation goals. Organizers called for increased cooperation between traditional institutions and environmental groups to expand these restoration efforts throughout Meghalaya.
