Guwahati: Assam is building its first compressed biogas plant. The project pulls together Japan’s Suzuki R&D Centre India, the National Dairy Development Board, and Purabi Dairy. They signed the deal in New Delhi on July 2.
The plant turns cow dung and farm scraps into clean fuel and organic fertilizer. It aims to cut greenhouse gases and boost soil health. North East Dairy and Foods Ltd will run the site, while Suzuki provides the cash in exchange for carbon credits. The NDDB handles the technical side.
This initiative helps farmers make extra cash from waste. NDDB Chairman Dr. Meenesh Shah said, "Assam and the Northeast are well known for their naturally sustainable farming systems."
Suzuki Motor Corporation already runs nine similar plants across India. This new facility pushes Assam toward clean energy while strengthening the regional economy. It marks a major milestone for the India-Japan partnership.
