James Sangma to Champion Meghalaya Issues in Rajya Sabha Bid

Shillong: Meghalaya Democratic Alliance nominee James P.K. Sangma announced his intention to prioritize key regional concerns in Parliament ahead of the June 18 Rajya Sabha election. Sangma, who expects to file his nomination papers on Friday, plans to advocate for the long-standing demand to implement the Inner Line Permit and the inclusion of Khasi and Garo languages in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.

Addressing reporters on Thursday, Sangma expressed his appreciation for the support from alliance partners including the UDP, HSPDP, BJP, and independent legislators. He noted that the Rajya Sabha serves as a crucial national platform to address gaps in regional representation. "As a representative of Meghalaya, I will have the opportunity to voice concerns and raise issues that are important to our state and the region but often do not receive adequate attention at the national level," he stated.

Sangma confirmed that he will treat the resolutions passed by the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly as a top priority during his tenure. He also committed to continuing the legislative work of outgoing member Wanwei Roy Kharlukhi. By maintaining contact with his predecessor, Sangma aims to ensure that ongoing state projects receive consistent advocacy in the national capital. He is widely expected to secure the state's lone Rajya Sabha seat without significant opposition.
