Shillong: James K. Sangma, a national vice president of the National People's Party, was elected unopposed to represent Meghalaya in the Rajya Sabha. The Meghalaya Democratic Alliance candidate secured the lone seat after the official deadline for candidacy withdrawal passed on Thursday.
Following his confirmation, Sangma met with the Returning Officer to accept his certificate of election. Addressing the press, he acknowledged the weight of his new role. "I just want to say that I feel humbled and, at the same time, very honoured to be shouldering this responsibility," he stated.
Sangma outlined a clear agenda for his tenure, which includes advocating for the inclusion of the Khasi and Garo languages in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. He also committed to pushing for the implementation of the Inner Line Permit in Meghalaya, noting that he intends to carry forward the resolution already passed by the state legislature. Additionally, he plans to serve as a liaison in New Delhi to help accelerate the rollout of central government programs and schemes within his home state.
Regarding the challenges of representing a smaller state, Sangma noted that limited parliamentary time often hinders representatives from the Northeast. He intends to persist in requesting more speaking opportunities to ensure the diverse concerns of the entire region are heard. He emphasized that persistence and patience will be the cornerstones of his approach in the Upper House.
