Shillong: The Jaintia National Council is sounding the alarm. Bureaucrats are fast-tracking the Shree Cement project at Lum Syrman despite a direct order to maintain status quo. The state government promised a fact-finding committee to investigate unrest at the site, yet progress continues unabated.
CEC president Sambormi Lyngdoh slammed the State Level Expert Appraisal Committee for taking up environmental clearance requests on September 8. Lyngdoh stated, "The JNC alleged that the continued processing of the environmental clearance undermines the purpose of the fact-finding committee, which was promised following unrest during a recent public hearing."
Critics view the committee as a distraction. Landowners and farmers remain firmly opposed to the development. The JNC demands to know the names of the committee members and the official deadline for their report. They argue that granting Consent to Establish will render any investigation useless. The group insists the entire process is tied to a deeply disputed public hearing.
