Itanagar: Itanagar Police issued an alert today regarding a spike in rental and paying guest scams. Fraudsters target locals hunting for housing on social media and other digital platforms. They post fake listings to lure victims. Scammers demand advance cash for booking fees, security deposits, or verification charges. They vanish once the money hits their accounts.
Inspector Techi Nega, the officer-in-charge at Itanagar Police Station, urged citizens to keep their guard up. He warned that seemingly genuine offers often lead to financial loss. "Inspector Nega advised residents to take several precautions before making any payment."
Check the property yourself. Never settle a rental deal based only on texts, messages, or phone calls. Always meet the property owner or an authorized agent in person. Demand a written rental agreement and get a formal receipt for every rupee spent. If a listing looks too good to be true, stay away.
