Itanagar: The Itanagar Capital Region administration has officially prohibited the commercial slaughter of Mithuns to protect the vulnerable species. Deputy Commissioner Toko Babu issued the order under the Agricultural Produce Marketing Regulation Act and the Essential Commodities Act. Anyone found violating this new directive faces a fine of 20,000 rupees.
A monitoring team led by the vice-chairperson of the Agricultural Produce Market Committee will enforce the ban. The deputy commissioner has requested that police superintendents in Itanagar and Naharlagun provide full support to officials during enforcement operations. Arunachal Pradesh hosts over 70 percent of the global Mithun population, making the protection of these semi-domesticated bovines a priority for regional researchers.
In a separate regulatory action, the Itanagar Municipal Corporation has ordered the removal of all meat, fruit, and vegetable stalls situated along the NH-415 corridor. Officials cited concerns regarding traffic congestion and public health risks. Vendors have been given a 10-day deadline to dismantle their structures and clear the area.
