Itanagar: The Itanagar Capital Region administration issued a ban on the commercial slaughter of Mithuns, the state animal of Arunachal Pradesh, to better regulate local trade. Deputy Commissioner Toko Babu announced that violators face a fine of Rs 20,000 under the Agricultural Produce Marketing Act and the Essential Commodities Act. This regulation focuses on curbing unauthorized commercial activity while respecting traditional cultural and ritual practices.
To enforce the new policy, the Agricultural Produce Market Committee will lead monitoring teams throughout the capital. Local police in Itanagar and Naharlagun have been instructed to support these teams during enforcement operations.
In a separate initiative to reduce traffic congestion and improve public hygiene, the Itanagar Municipal Corporation ordered the removal of all meat, fruit, and vegetable stalls encroaching on the NH-415 highway. Officials cited waste accumulation and poor sanitary conditions as primary concerns behind the decision.
Vendors have 10 days to clear their temporary structures from the roadside. The municipal body warned that failure to comply will result in the seizure of goods and legal action under municipal bylaws.
