Itanagar Faces 24-Hour Shutdown Over Alleged Illegal Structures

Itanagar: Itanagar observed a 24-hour shutdown on May 28 after the Arunachal Pradesh Indigenous Youth Organisation called for a protest against alleged illegal structures and undocumented migrants. The bandh, which began at 5:00 AM, faced strong opposition from local authorities who declared the action unlawful. The District Magistrate cited Supreme Court directives against forced strikes when invoking Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita to maintain public order.

Authorities deployed heavy security across Itanagar, Naharlagun, and Nirjuli to prevent disruptions and potential road blockades. Police also took several key organizers into custody as a preventive measure. The timing of the protest sparked controversy because it coincided with Eid celebrations, leading some observers to argue the shutdown targeted a specific religious community.

APIYO president Taro Sonam Liyak rejected claims of religious bias, asserting the movement aims to protect the demographic interests of indigenous people. He stated the organization has campaigned against illegal migration since 2023 and acted only after the government failed to respond to ultimatums regarding local mosques and madrasas.

Deputy Inspector General of Police Tumme Amo urged citizens to reject what he called bandh culture, emphasizing that such disruptions hinder state development. He noted that the administration led by Chief Minister Pema Khandu has already initiated discussions with community leaders regarding immigration concerns and the Inner Line Permit system, promising further action through official channels.
