Internal BJP struggle erupts over South Shillong seat

Shillong: Internal friction is boiling over inside Meghalaya's BJP ranks. The arrival of RSS veteran Homnath Gautam has ignited a high-stakes battle for the South Shillong constituency. Sitting MLA Sanbor Shullai now faces an unexpected challenge within his own party fortress.

Gautam publicly claimed his stake for the seat shortly after signing up. This move rattled the party base. Senior leader AL Hek is now scrambling to contain the fallout. He insists the party will handle these internal tensions behind closed doors.

Hek dismissed concerns regarding the sudden crowded field of candidates. "There is nothing wrong with allowing anyone to join the party. We should not oppose new entrants if we want to lead the government in 2028," Hek said.

The tension hit a breaking point after former MLA Mohendro Rapsang also joined the fold. Insiders remain wary of Gautam, who uses his 25-year RSS history as political leverage. Party members argue this tactic undermines the traditional nature of their ideology. Meanwhile, the party continues to drag its feet on naming a contender for the upcoming Shillong Parliamentary bye-election. Hek claims they are still doing their homework to find a winner.
