Imphal: The proscribed Coordination Committee (CorCom) issued a statement ahead of its 15th Foundation Day. The group claims the 1949 merger of Manipur into India was an annexation. It criticizes the ongoing use of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act. The outfit claims this has led to systemic human rights violations, including enforced disappearances and sexual violence.
CorCom Media Coordinator M. Shak-Hen issued the release. The organization argues that modern India operates on colonial-era territorial maps. It claims, "The nationalist movement during the colonial period primarily served the interests of dominant upper-caste groups and failed to recognise the distinct historical identities of several erstwhile kingdoms."
The group also sounded an alarm on regional environmental health. It claims the National Mission on Edible Oils-Oil Palm threatens local forests. The statement names Patanjali Foods Limited and Godrej Agrovet Limited as partners in projects covering 66,652 hectares. It says officials failed to get consent from indigenous communities.
Tensions remain high. CorCom accused armed groups under Suspension of Operations agreements of running proxy operations and poppy cultivation. The group rejected ethnic homeland demands. It urged communities to drop ethnic division and push for coexistence.
