India repatriates 274 fugitives as Northeast insurgent space shrinks

Shillong: The federal government is tightening the noose on insurgents hiding abroad. Officials have hauled 274 fugitives back to India from 36 different nations since 2019. This push hits hard. The government also seized assets totaling 17,874 crore from these suspects linked to terror, economic crimes, and organized criminal activity.

Northeast militant groups face a brutal reality. Their operational room is vanishing fast. While key figures like Paresh Baruah hide behind fake identities and factions still linger in Myanmar’s Chin province, their reach is crumbling. Intelligence sources say these groups now act on a skeletal scale, relying on foreign funding to launch infrequent, sporadic strikes.

The Ministry of Home Affairs considers these extraditions a top priority. Success stems from legal updates, persistent diplomacy, and better institutional coordination. Union Home Minister Amit Shah says the state relies on a three-pronged strategy: "global outreach, strong coordination, and smart diplomacy, supported by structural changes and legal reforms." These methods have successfully cut down the safe havens once exploited by those fleeing Indian justice.
