Imphal: The Manipuri Pony Society hosted a one-day health camp at the Manipuri Pony Breeding Farm in Imphal this past Sunday. The event involved a collaboration with the Manipur Horse Riding and Polo Association and the Manipur Equestrian Association, operating under the oversight of the state Directorate of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Services.
Veterinarians focused on performing general medical examinations and educating owners on seasonal ailments. Dr. Romi Maibam, a specialist at the State Veterinary Hospital, noted that these efforts serve as a vital preventive measure before the monsoon rains and the busy polo season begin. He highlighted the risks posed by changing environmental conditions, explaining that "horses remain particularly susceptible to several diseases during the pre-monsoon and post-monsoon periods due to stagnant water and the growth of fresh grass, which may carry eggs and larvae of various parasites and worms."
These parasites often target the gastrointestinal tract and can cause severe complications without proper treatment. Organizers aimed to reach between 110 and 120 horses during the camp. By midday, nearly 70 animals had received assessments, with the team completing the remaining check-ups in the afternoon. The initiative underscores the ongoing commitment to protecting the welfare of the Manipuri pony, an animal that maintains deep cultural and sporting roots in the region.
