Imphal Academy Refreshes Nata Sankirtan with Modern Fusion

Imphal: Yumjao Mayum Living Art Academy brought a fresh spin to traditional Manipuri Nata Sankirtan on June 25. The group performed Phamyei and Jaydik at Ramji Prabhu Mandir in Imphal before an audience of local art leaders.

The production merges the traditional Meitei Pung with Western and Hindustani musical styles. Yumnam Bhumeshwor noted that the academy focuses on keeping the state's heritage alive. "Manipur is blessed with a rich cultural heritage that has earned global recognition," he said.

Artists updated the Meitei Pung for the performance. Original instruments used local cattle hide for straps, but supply shortages forced a switch to jersey cow leather. Players now favor this version for its superior sound and tonal range.

The show also highlighted Jaydik. This rhythmic sequence dates back to the reign of Maharaj Chandrakirti. Many young people have never heard this classical taal. The academy aims to bridge that gap by reintroducing these traditional beats to modern crowds.
