Kohima: Twenty-eight mithun farmers from Mirem Village, Arunachal Pradesh, completed a four-day training program focused on boosting productivity and profitability through scientific husbandry. The event took place from June 2 to 5, 2026, at the ICAR-NRC on Mithun in Medziphema.
Dr. Girish Patil, director of ICAR-NRC on Mithun, opened the sessions by highlighting how modern techniques can transform local livelihoods. He stated, "Scientific husbandry practices to improve productivity, animal health and farm profitability, thereby strengthening the livelihoods of tribal farming communities" remain a primary objective for the institute.
The curriculum covered essential topics including breeding, feeding, healthcare, housing, and fodder production. Attendees visited the Institute’s Mithun Farm for hands-on experience and toured the Khonoma Mithun Conservation Unit to study community-led sustainable management. Practical demonstrations on processing mithun meat and milk provided insights into new revenue streams. The training concluded with a certificate ceremony, as participants committed to integrating these new methods into their farming operations.
