Homes Torched as Ethnic Violence Flares in Manipur

Imphal: Violence ripped through Manipur’s Kamjong district on Wednesday. Armed groups burned at least 17 homes near the Sahamphung Police Station. The trouble started at 8:30 am when attackers from a Kuki village targeted a neighboring Naga settlement.

Nine houses went up in flames during the initial assault. The situation worsened by midday. Suspected cadres from the Kuki National Army and armed volunteers struck again. Eight more houses were torched in the secondary attacks. Security forces deployed quickly to the villages. Troops now control the area to stop more fighting.

"The situation remained tense," officials said as personnel monitored the villages. No injuries were reported during the chaos. This flare-up follows the deaths of six Naga civilians earlier this year. Their bodies turned up on June 11 after an abduction in May. That tragedy sparked protests and blocked roads across the region. Disputes over supply convoys and public demonstrations continue to fuel the fire between these communities. Police keep a close watch on the district.
