Historic Namrup Fertilizer Plant Demolished for New Project

Guwahati: Crews leveled the historic Unit-I of the Namrup Fertiliser Plant this week. The site operated for over five decades. It served as India's first natural gas-based fertilizer plant when it opened on January 1, 1969. The facility fueled agricultural growth across Assam and the Northeast for generations.

The demolition clears the ground for the Assam Valley Fertilizer and Chemical Company Limited. This joint venture brings a modern ammonia-urea plant to the region. Officials claim this project will boost local fertilizer output and agricultural self-reliance. It also promises to create thousands of jobs.

Residents watched the site fall with mixed feelings. Locals and officials noted that "the Namrup-I plant carried decades of industrial heritage and countless memories for generations of workers and the local community." The state views the new project as a major industrial investment. Construction on the updated site begins immediately.
