Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma officially took his oath as a member of the 16th Legislative Assembly on Thursday. Protem Speaker Chandra Mohan Patowary administered the ceremony at the start of the new legislative session. Sarma opted to take his oath in Assamese, setting a precedent for other legislators who chose various recognized languages, including Bengali, Bodo, and Sanskrit, to reflect the state's linguistic diversity.
This swearing-in follows a commanding performance by the National Democratic Alliance in the recent state elections. The coalition secured 102 of the 126 available seats, ensuring their return to power. Within this alliance, the Bharatiya Janata Party claimed 82 seats, while its partners, the Asom Gana Parishad and the Bodoland People’s Front, each secured 10 seats.
Opposition parties will also hold a significant presence in the House. The Congress party earned 19 seats, followed by the Raijor Dal with two. The All India United Democratic Front and the Trinamool Congress also hold seats, with two and one members respectively. All elected officials were instructed to submit copies of their oaths to the assembly office to formalize their entry into the legislature.
