Himanta Biswa Sarma Slams Rahul Gandhi Over Constitution Booklet

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma attacked Rahul Gandhi over his habit of waving a red Constitution booklet at rallies. Sarma claims the text actually documents how Indira Gandhi crushed democracy during the 1975 Emergency. He spoke at an event marking the 51st anniversary of the suspension of civil liberties.

Sarma bought his own copy in Delhi to check the facts. He expected the publishers to hide the history of the Congress leader's grandmother. Instead, he found the truth printed right there. "If you ever see Congress leader Rahul Gandhi giving a speech holding a red Constitution booklet, you should know that the same booklet mentions how Indira Gandhi killed the Constitution during the Emergency," Sarma said.

The BJP marked the day across the country. They view the Emergency as a total assault on democratic institutions. The Congress party rejects these claims. They continue to defend their record on constitutional rights. The 21-month period remains a bitter point of debate in national politics.
