Imphal: Roadwork on National Highway-37 is wrecking the Community Health Centre in Nungba. Massive earth cutting for the highway expansion has left the local oxygen plant, blood bank, and trauma centre hanging by a thread. The facility is a mess.
An oxygen plant built during the pandemic sits idle because the power grid failed and construction crews damaged the site. Officials now consider the location unsafe for operation. Stability concerns caused by deep soil cutting have also halted work on the new trauma centre.
Staff quarters are falling apart too. Roofs leak during rainstorms and some buildings are so damaged they are off-limits. Chief Medical Officer Dr. Azin Meiringmei led a team to inspect the ruins of the ICU and housing units. He noted the state of the campus with alarm. "The situation has further deteriorated after large-scale earth cutting for the highway expansion severely damaged the CHC campus," the report stated.
Medical workers stay on the job despite these hazards. They recently kicked off the Stop Diarrhoea 2026 campaign to fight illness in the district. Even with thin staffing and broken walls, the clinic keeps its doors open for the people of this remote sub-division.
