Itanagar: Ume Perme died at his home in New Borguli village on October 15. The 77-year-old pharmacist succumbed to a prolonged illness at 4 am. He was a pillar of the North-East Frontier Agency era. He spent decades bringing medicine to the state's most isolated corners.
Born on December 30, 1948, to Gumin and Yamoni Perme, he finished school in Mebo and Pasighat. He started his government career on January 12, 1972. His first assignment sent him to the Siyum Circle in the Upper Subansiri district. He spent four years near the Indo-China border. He treated local residents and soldiers struggling with high-altitude sickness.
He later worked in Koyu, Sille, and his native Borguli. During the 1985 bloody dysentery outbreak, his health centre was the only facility for the entire region. He battled a malaria epidemic in 1987 across the Monggu-Banggo villages. He often ran the health centre alone when no doctor was available. He also assisted the Pasighat leprosy colony and helped build the Pasighat-Pangin road as a student.
Perme retired on February 1, 1992. His wife, Abul Tayeng Perme, died before him. He leaves behind five sons, three daughters, and many grandchildren. Mebo MLA Oken Tayeng honored his memory, noting his service to rural communities. Oken Tayeng stated, "Perme's passing marks the loss of a healthcare worker remembered for bringing essential medical services to remote communities during the formative years of Arunachal Pradesh's public healthcare system."
