Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh reached a medical milestone this week. Surgeons completed the state's first kidney transplant at the Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences in Naharlagun. A 34-year-old man received the organ from his 45-year-old sister. Doctors confirmed both remain stable after the procedure.
The surgery marks the end of a three-year preparation phase. TRIHMS staff worked alongside specialists from Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi. Chief Minister Pema Khandu visited the patients and the medical team following the operation. He praised the long-term collaboration that made the milestone possible. “For the past three years, doctors and medical professionals from TRIHMS have received training, guidance and handholding from the specialist team at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi. This collaboration has enabled TRIHMS to successfully undertake Arunachal Pradesh’s first-ever renal transplant,” Khandu wrote on X.
Dr. Harsha Jauhari of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital oversaw the transplant. He noted the increasing rates of kidney failure linked to diabetes and hypertension. Dr. Jauhari expects the institute to become a regional centre of excellence. Transplant surgeon Dr. Naloh Mibang stated that the patients should recover fully within 72 hours.
The state government is now boosting financial aid for patients. Officials increased support for kidney transplants to 12.5 lakh rupees, while liver and bone marrow transplant grants rose to 22.5 lakh and 17.5 lakh rupees respectively. These changes fall under the CM CARES initiative. Future plans include focusing on cardiology and completing a cancer hospital in Midpu. Construction at the Midpu site is currently 55 percent complete.
